COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

One of the primary goals of the Conasauga River Alliance is to engage the community by providing educational, recreational, and volunteer opportunities. This has been accomplished through local workshops, stream cleanups, annual golf tournaments, information tables at community events, and individual presentations to classrooms of all types.

Many of our workshops have been associated with demonstration "best management practices" used to reduce various pollutants originating from within the watershed. Other workshops have been designed to offer financial incentives for homeowners willing to invest in making their property more river-friendly. Stream cleanups and golf tournaments are annual events that have built meaningful relationships between the Alliance and other local organizations.

The Conasauga River Alliance also financially assists our local citizens through our septic system repair program. Our watershed has a high septic system failure rate due to aging systems, improper maintenance, and poor soils. Most of the impaired segments of the Conasauga River system earned this designation due to pollutants from animal waste. In order to improve water quality while financially assisting our citizens during the recent economic downturn, we have contributed over $100,000 since January of 2009 to septic system repairs and installations throughout the watershed.
